New toy

Design Ubuntu

Picked up a N900 the other day. It’s really quite amazing. Best of all it’s linux *and* the keyboard is big enough for my thick fingers. The design isn’t as nice as the iphone though.

Ending poverty with open hardware

Design Ubuntu

The Hexayurt is a new kind of sheltering solution. To make the simplest hexayurt, make a wall by putting six sheets of plywood on their sides in a hexagon. Cut six more sheets in half diagonally, and screw them together into a shallow cone. Lift the roof on to the wall with a large group

Do I really want to touch my computer all day?

Design Ubuntu

This concept video has been doing the rounds following a brief showing on Tech Crunch. It looks like a tablet interface you could do work on but I have to wonder if that’s a way of working that I’d even really want. For better or worse we’ve established a way of working with traditional documents

Improving Launchpad bug workflow for opportunistic programmers

Design Ubuntu

I’m a talented software engineer. I have a good deal of application programming experience on Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iPhone, Android, and the Web. I’m crazy about style guidelines, correctness, functional decomposition, self-documenting code, explicit documentation, code review, unit tests, etc. I’m confident that for...

Draggy Fists

Design Ubuntu

It always feels dangerous to mess with the mouse pointer when working with Flash as it has a tendency to vanish entirely if you you miss a mouse eve due to the mouse button being released outside the Flash window. This has resulted in my fake version

A bug in two parts

Design Ubuntu

I finally got round to going through the photos on my camera this morning – I still haven’t got round to putting my holiday (August holiday!) photos on Flickr so I thought this could be the way to spend a chilly Saturday morning. As is obvious from the image, something went wrong. In fact two things

Karmic RetrospectiveLong story short: we fixed 76 paper cuts for Karmic. Hooray! Congratulations!
